When you make a music video there is a lot of different things you have to take into account and in this post I will explain the things you have to take into account and why you have to do it and why people make music videos
Lets start with free lance music video directors. The purpose of them doing music videos is to help them with getting recognition usually but there are other reasons, lets say a director makes a video for an artist who is famous, such as Kanye West and the video is very creative and pretty much amazing, people are gonna wanna know who made that video, people kind out, for example other artists and they might want them to make their music video, that means more recognition and more money.
It also helps the artist because if the video is interesting and it matches the music, this will help give them more recognition, for example. Miley cyrus did this with her video wrecking ball, granted she was already famous but that video made it so you can go pretty much anywhere and people knew exactly who she is. Miley cyrus also used the video to change her look to the public, what she wears, pretty much how she presents herself to the public, she did this because a lot of people were going to see this video so she did it through the video, changed her look, this is why getting the artists look in a music video is vital.
types of Music Videos
There is a lot of different types of music videos that some directors are better at than others and so on, you get music videos such as a lot of OK GO'S videos, they are crazy and very unique style to them, such as OK Go's here we go again video, it is a one shot videos based on treadmills, a one video is when the whole video is shot at once, one shot, it never switches scene or shot, this is the meaning of a one shot video. They have a lot of crazy videos, pretty simple video but this video now has over 50 million views on youtube, unfortunately I can not find the exact budget for the music video but I can imagine it was around £1,000 because all they probably did was hire six treadmills for the day and buy a silver sheet for the background and a static camera on a tripod and some static cameras are cheap.
Director: James Frost, OK Go and Syyn Labs.
Producer: Shirley Moyers. For "This Too Shall Pass" Music Video. OK Go, asked a lot from them, they wanted the video to time with the song, some of the instruments and so on to take part in the song, so play a part in the song and so it ends when the song ends and they wanted all of this done in one shot, it took months to get done, they did over 80+ retakes when doing this.
Discussion of OK Go "This Too Shall Pass"
In this video they discuss how they made the video and the problems they had to overcome to complete this video. and what OK Go asked of them to do, they talked about things such as that, as I explained earlier they wanted a one shot video, they have 85 takes for this but only 3 takes actually did the whole run, they also discussed, they talked about how a lot of the small things they used, they were annoying to work with but they had to use them, because of things such as the temperature, would make them fall out and make things go wrong. He discussed the planning for this video was huge, they had plans to do certain thing but they had to not use it because it just simply did not work with what they were doing such as timing, it would mess the timing up with the song and obviously the timing for this kind of video is essential
Hoodie Allen -Act My age
this video has a lot of shots in it, it cuts maybe around every five seconds, its kind of got a POV style to it, as if what you are seeing is what the person is seeing which you are viewing, from his/she eyes, they did a behind the scenes video of this showing some of the ways they did this video.
in this video you can see how they did some of the shots, such as the underwater shot and when he thrown him into the pool, you can see its the kind of video you would think if you did not know much about music videos, you would think they used a gopro or something but you can see in a lot of the shots they did not, they used a regular camera, they achieved the effect they were aiming for with this video.
